Our recipe here today is an old fashion bread recipe that can be enjoyed as a dessert or warmed with butter and a hot cup of tea.
After scald milk is at room temp or lukewarm add to your mixing bowl and add proof yeast and beaten egg, then sift two cups of flour stirring while sifting until dough mixture becomes smooth.
After all ingredients is smooth and coming together sift the remainder of flour and work dough with spoon or mixer with hook.

Ingredients
- SCALDING MILK INGREDIENTS
- Milk - 3/4 cup
- Sugar - 1/3 cup
- Salt - 1 ½ tsp
- Butter or margarine - 1/2 cup
- PROOFING YEAST INGREDIENTS
- Yeast - 1 tsp, fast rising, traditional
- Sugar - 1 tsp
- Warm water - 1/2 cup
- DOUGH INGREDIENTS AND EXTRA
- All-purpose flour - 4¼ cup, sifted
- Egg - 1 large
- Lemon rind - 1 tbsp
- Butter or margarine - 1/4 cup
- Brown sugar - 1/2 cup, lightly packed
- Honey - 1/3 cu, more if needed
- Walnuts - 3/4 cup, chopped
Instructions
Method for scaling milk:
Scald together in a saucepan milk, sugar, salt and 1/2 cup butter on medium heat, after cool milk mixture to lukewarm.
Method for yeast:
In a bowl add warm water, sugar and yeast stir together, let yeast proof for 5 minutes.
Method for dough:
In a large bowl add lukewarm milk mixture, yeast, lemon rind and egg, mix together, then add 2 cups of sifted flour and mix together until smooth.
After work in the other 2 cups of sifted all-purpose flour, by mixing, kneading and folding dough until dough is formed into a ball and got a nice elastic texture, working dough for 5 to 10 minutes. Keep ¼ cup of sifted all-purpose flour for working the dough after risen.
Grease top of dough with melted butter or margarine, keep some melted butter for tube pan and dough ring when made. “ mark the sign of a cross on dough” (optional ) then cover with a sheet of parchment paper and towel. Keep in warm area in your kitchen, or inside the OVEN with LIGHT ON ONLY! Let rise for 30 minutes.
After remove dough from bowl unto a floured board, punch the air from dough rolling it into an oblong shape, around 9” x 20” after pour honey, brown sugar mix over flatten dough. Then top with 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, then starting at the long end of dough, roll outwit like a jelly roll. Then left carefully into a 8½ inch greased tube pan or bunt pan, Join ends of dough to form a ring.
Brush top dough ring with melted butter and cover to rise for 30 minutes, then when risen pre-heat oven to 350ºF and bake for 30 to 40 minutes. After baked remove from oven and pan unto a grate then glaze with honey and top with ½ cup chopped walnuts.
Bonita’s Tips: Have all ingredients measured and ready to use, pre-grease pan, have extra ingredients to the side for later use.
