SOUR CREAM BREAD
Hi and welcome to our website!
If you are wondering what sour cream bread is, it's a yeast type bread and one of the main ingredients in it is sour cream.
Sour cream is one of the main ingredients to make this bread so tasty, also the egg gives it a cake like texture. The air pockets from the yeast and flavour from the butter and oil mix.
All-purpose Flour, sour cream, melted butter, oil, traditional yeast, milk, sea salt, sugar, egg and water is the ingredients needed to make this tasty bread.
I'm using my mixer with an hook. Usually I would mix all my breads with a wooden spoon and my hand. But just recently my husband gifted me with this little stand mixer to help in the kitchen sometimes. So sweet and it is taking some getting use too!
Mix all the ingredients slowly together with the wet ingredients in the middle to gradually bring in the flour from the sides, add more warm water if needed. This will take about 2 to 3 minutes with the mixer and 5 to 10 minutes by hand.
Put the dough onto your counter top or leave in the bowl. Folding the dough inwards and pushing down with your fists to knead the dough well. This will take another 2 to 3 minutes dusting with more flour as needed.
I hope you are still very interested in making my friends bread recipe today, if us continue onto the recipe and please watch our short video tutorial before you go!

- Sugar - 2 tbsp
- Sea salt - 1 tsp
- Melted Butter or margarine - ¼ cup
- Oil - ¼ cup, vegetable or canola
- Traditional or fast rising yeast - 2¼ tsp
- Milk - ½ cup, warm
- Water - ½ cup, warm, extra if needed
- Sour cream - 1 cup
- Egg - 1 large
Instructions
Method:
In a small bowl add warm water, sugar and yeast, stir together and let rise for five minutes.
In large bowl add flour and sea salt toss together, make a hold in the middle of flour and add melted butter, oil, warm milk, sour cream and mix wet ingredients first together by hand or mixer with a hook, working in the centre bringing in the flour.
Add risen yeast and in a small bowl crack one egg and mix with fork and add to wet mixture. Fold in ingredients with a wooden spoon or mixer with hook and mix all ingredients together until all combined and dough is smooth and elastic. This will take 2 or 3 minutes by mixer and 5 minutes by hand.
Put dough onto your floured counter top and knead dough for another 3 to 5 minutes, by hands. Form into a large dough ball and oil both sides, cut a cross in top and cover with a large towel or blanket to keep warm. Let rise for about 30 minutes.
After risen remove from bowl and place in a deep pan or cast iron pan, keeping the dough round. Cut another cross in top or slashes with a knife.
Preheat oven to 350ºF and place dough in oven and bake for 1 hour, check with a internal thermometer and the reading should be 190ºF when baked remove from oven.
If you like the crust hard keep it uncovered, if you like it soft, add butter over top and cover with a towel for 5 minutes.
Bonita’s Tips:
Using mixer with hook only for mixing dough, then remove onto counter or leave in bowl.
Bake in a case iron pan, deep pie pan or bread pans.
Let risen covered on the counter top, or in the cast iron pan in the oven with the LIGHT ON ONLY!

Our recipe today is one my very good friend would make for us every time we stopped by her place for a visit. It have been a while now sense we had her bread, so today I’m going to share with you her recipe and our bread pictures to help you make this tasty bread as well. 🙂
Thank you to my friends daughter for sharing her moms recipe with us. xo
Preheat oven to 350ºf and bake this bread for 1 hour or until internal temperature is around 190ºf then when you remove from the oven you can do one of two things……
One: Leave sour cream bread on the counter uncovered and no butter over top to make the crust hard.
Two: Rub butter over the top and cover with a tea towel and let rest for 5 minutes to soften the top.
Having a nice cup of tea is a must with this bread or a glass of wine!
Thank you so much for stopping by and for watching our short video tutorial today!
Leave us a message before you go letting us know if you made our recipe today and if you made this type of bread before.
