Bologna Stew - Traditional Newfoundland
Hi! and welcome to Bonita's Kitchen!
I guess you are wondering what is bologna stew?
Where do I start, Bologna is called Newfoundland steak and loved by many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. This recipe for Bologna Stew is so tasty you will add it to your weekly meal plan. One of my good friends shared this recipe with me and she have been making it for many years and her family loves it.
This recipe is also super easy to make and can be made in your slow cooker with no fuss, I believe making it this way you can control the amount of salt and oil that is added by making smart choices. This is one of many dishes you can make with Bologna, please try this one and let me know how it turned out and what you did to make it your own.
If you are looking to make something quick and easy on a weekend or middle of the week, this is lovely.
I hope you are enjoying this recipe and please take a few minutes and watch our video tutorial and this way you got a better understanding on the way this meal is made. I'm going to share with you a link to our cookbooks or just send me a message and i will love to help you own your copy.
Ingredients
- Bologna - 2 cups, cubed
- Onion - 1 medium, peeled and diced
- Potatoes - 2 medium, peeled and cubes
- Carrots - 2 each, peeled and chopped
- Celery sticks - 2 each, chopped
- Ketchup - 4 tbsp, more if needed
- Worcestershire - 2 tbsp
- Pepper - ½ tsp
- Butter or margarine - 1 tbsp
- Olive oil - ½ tsp
Instructions
Chop Bologna, and your vegetables in big cubes expect your onion dice in small pieces.
Preheat a large frying pan on medium heat then add butter and olive oil, then add your diced onion. Fry until your onion starts to cook, then add your Bologna and continue frying until golden brown. Reduce heat to low then add your ketchup,Worcestershire sauce, and pepper let it continue cooking for another few minutes then remove from heat.
In another large preheated pot add all your veggies and some olive oil fry until your veggies start to get golden brown, then add your Bologna and onion mixture. Mix everything together then top off with warm or hot water just to cover the top of the veggies.
Continue cooking on medium heat for about ½ hour or until veggies are fork tender or almost cooked. At this stage you can taste your sauce to see if you need any more flavours you can add more of the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, pepper or salt. I didn't put any salt in this recipe because I felt it wasn't needed, you also can build your flavours by adding one of your favourite veggies or spices.
Bonita’s Tips:
his recipe for Bologna Stew can also be done in a slow cooker on low heat, starting it by frying your meat and onions, adding the sauces and spices then all put together in your slow cooker for a few hours, until you are ready to serve it.
Serve this dish with bread or bread rolls, this will help you soak up all your sauce.
Our recipe for bologna stew is so delicious you will add it to your weekly meal list.
This dish is packed full of fresh vegetables and flavour, the best thing about making this meal yourself you can control the salt and build on those big flavours. Bologna is not my first choice in meals for me and my family but when it’s mixed with vegetables like carrots, onions, celery, potatoes and turnip I’m all for it.
There are so many types when it comes to bologna and most people that have eaten bologna before knows the kind they enjoy, some it too salty and some it to oily. So you decide what works for you, but you can always boil the bologna a little before you cook it all together to remove that salt and oil.
I’m gong to share with you a couple of more recipes that is quick and easy to make and you will love them.
