Traditional Newfoundland Date Crumbles

Traditional Newfoundland Date Crumbles, are a big deal to the Newfoundland people. We grow up with these and they were mostly made at Christmas time to enjoy all through Christmas. They are super easy to make and ever so tasty, so lets get started. Follow the pictures or watch my 10 miunte video any way you decide it will be a good fit.

Ingredients
- Pitted Dates - 500g
- Water - 2 cups
- Butter - 3 tbsp
- Brown sugar - 3 tbsp
- CRUMBLE:
- Roll oats - 2 cups
- Flour - 2 cups
- Unsweetened coconut - 1 cup
- Brown sugar - 1 cup
- Baking powder - 2 tsp
- Butter or margarine - 1 1/2 cups
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°, lightly grease your pans, or line with parchment paper
- Making your filling, in a medium pot add pack of chopped dates, 3 tbsp butter, 3 tbsp brown sugar, and 2 cups of water. Start the pot boiling on medium heat, stir occasionally for about 15 minutes or until filling is thickened, then remove from heat.
- Making your crumble, in a large bowl add 2 cups roll oats, 2 cups white or brown flour, 1 cup brown sugar and 1 cup unsweetened coconut, 2 tsp baking powder, 1 1/2 cups of cubed unsalted butter. Mix all ingredients together with your hand until all is evenly incorporate together.
- Layering your pans, in a 11 x 14 inch pan or 7 x 11 inch pan or both, start by sprinkling your crumble mixture on the bottom layer of your pans about 1/3 inch thick, press the crumble mixture down on this layer.
- Then take about 3 or four scoops of your date mixture and put on top of your crumbles, spread evenly over your crumble mixture.
- Next step sprinkle another layer of crumbles mixture over the top of the date mixture. Don't press this layer down just sprinkle over the dates.
- Bake your date crumbles in a pre-heated oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from heat let cool then cut in 2 x 2 inch squares.

THERE IS SO MANY WAYS TO MAKE THESE DELICIOUS DATE CRUMBLES!
Don’t be afraid to explore the many ways there are to make them, any way you make them they are hard to resists. I like making them a few weeks before I’m going to need them and freeze in a freezer container to keep them fresh. That will help you free up some time to do something else, like make more desserts.
DON’T CUT THEM UNTIL THEY ARE TOTALLY COOLED.
I know they will be hard to resists but they will fall apart if removed from the pan to quick, after they are cooled you can eat them cold or reheat the a single serving. I hope I’m making you hungry to make these lovely date crumbles, I keep some frozen all the time to have with a cup of tea.
