Traditional Newfoundland Moose Stroganoff
This recipe for moose stroganoff is so delicious you will look at cooking moose more often. Bottle moose rinsed in hot water to remove any sauce off the meat then fried on a medium heat with butter and olive oil for about twenty minutes or until golden brown. Then cover with a creamy mushroom sauce with a side of egg noodles. Making this dish with bottled moose you don't have to tenderize the meat first, if you make it with fresh moose meat you will have to cook the meat for a longer time.
Ingredients
- Bottled moose - 1 bottle rinsed
- Mushroom soup - 1 can
- Mushrooms - 1 can or fresh
- Onion - 1 medium
- Butter - 1/4 cup
- Garlic - 2 pieces
- Broth - 1 cup
- Beef seasoning or oxo - 1 tbsp
- Sea salt - Pinch (optional)
- Black pepper - Pinch
- Worcestershire sauce - 1 tsp
- Flour - 1/4 cup
- Olive oil - 1 tbsp
- Egg noodles - 3 cups
Instructions
1 - In a large saucepan add butter, chopped onions and mushrooms fry until golden brown on a medium heat that's about 10 minutes , after remove from pan to a bowl then place pan back on the heat.
2 - Take moose meat out of bottle and cut in small pieces, place in a strainer then rinse all the sauce off.
3 - Then toss moose meat in flour; season with salt and pepper then put in frying pan start to fry on medium heat with some butter and olive oil until golden brown that's about 15 minutes.
4 - Toss mushrooms and onions back in the frying pan then add chopped garlic and mix together.
5 - Then add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and mushroom soup mix together then cover.
6 - Turn heat to low continue cooking for about 10 minutes.
7 - Start the boil on a medium pot of water, add your noodles boil until noodles are tender about 5 to 10 minutes. Then drain water off and add them to your saucepan with moose meat and sauce.
8 - Remove from stove top and start plating.
Top your dish with fresh herbs and more pepper then serve.
Allergens
This meal can be made with a roast or steak of moose meat, if you make this dish with that you will need to tenderize your meat. First clean meat well, then add some seasonings, sea salt, black pepper, fresh garlic, chopped onions, two tbsp of your favourite sause or HP sauce, and 1/2 cup beef broth. Bake in a 350° oven for 2 hours then remove from heat and cut in small pieces.
Then in a large sausepan fry the moose meat until golden brown following the recipe on this site.
I know not everone got access to wild game meat but if you do place give this recipe a try im sure you will enjoy it.
But for those of you that don’t have access to moose meat, you can make this recipe using any of your favourite meats, ground beef, ground pork, chicken or turkey.

What is bottled moose?!? Is that the same as canned moose? If so, how big of “bottle” does this recipe use?
Hi David: Thank you for your question? Yes they are the same, all I did was open it and rinse the juice and gel off and then pat it dry and follow the recipe. I do have a video there you can look at if you wish before you make it. You can you fresh moose meat just cut it very thin and follow the recipe after. Enjoy Bonita
